Expanding Literacy & Reading Opportunities for You
The New Port Richey Public Library is proud to introduce its Mobile Library Branch, ELROY (Expanding Literacy & Reading Opportunities for You). Launching soon, this traveling library will deliver books, programs, and other resources directly to all areas of the city.
Serving as both a mobile library and an outreach vehicle, ELROY will make regular stops at schools, senior facilities, and other locations, ensuring that people of all ages have the opportunity to access library resources.
From information fairs to community festivals, ELROY will be there—rolling out library resources and services wherever you are.
How Elroy Came to Be
This project was made possible through the support of the City of New Port Richey and the dedication and generosity of the Friends of the New Port Richey Public Library, whose fundraising efforts played a key role in bringing this initiative to life.
Their combined commitment ensures that even more members of our community can benefit from the Library’s collection and programs.
A Namesake with a Legacy
The bookmobile is named in honor of Dr. Elroy M. Avery, founder of the New Port Richey Library. Dr. Avery moved to New Port Richey in 1919, bringing with him a personal collection of over 1,000 books that helped establish the Avery Library and Historical Society, which opened its doors in 1920. It would later become the New Port Richey Public Library.
Beyond his work with the Library, he was a prominent community leader, serving as the chairman and director of the First State Bank of New Port Richey and becoming the city’s first mayor when New Port Richey was incorporated in 1924.
A Civil War veteran, former Ohio State Senator, historian, and author, Dr. Avery believed that access to knowledge strengthens individuals and communities. Naming the Mobile Library Branch after him continues his mission, allowing the Library to educate, inspire, and connect residents throughout New Port Richey.
With ELROY on the road, the Library is starting an exciting new chapter, bringing the Library experience to everyone in New Port Richey.
